Osun plans security trust fund

Establishment of a  security trust fund and holding of  a maiden edition of the Osun State Carnival are parts of  the resolutions of the last state executive  council meeting. It also reaffirmed the state’s commitment to the joint ownership of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

The state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Sunday Akere,  said the establishment of a security trust fund became imperative in the face of the rising crime rate in the country and the state in particular.
Governor Rauf Aregbesola  presided over the meeting which started around 12 noon and ended around 12 midnight on Thursday, a week after he returned  from almost five weeks trip to Saudi Arabia for lesser Hajj.

Many at the meeting and others who were directly or indirectly affected by the long hours of the meeting complained at what they described as “a meeting fit to enter into the Guniness Book of Records as the longest executive meeting”

Some said they arrived their homes around 2a.m while some slept at the secretariat, blaming their ordeal on the governor’s trip and the need to brief him thoroughly on the past decisions of the executive and other issues. “The meeting lasted that long because members had to explain every happening and steps they took while the governor was away for five weeks. He raised questions on some of the steps taken. Imagine reading, ammending and adopting three meetings’ minutes. We were all drained. Nobody prays for that type of day again.Governor should stay more at home to run the state. The state fares better when he’s around”,a source affected by the meeting pleaded.

Akere explained that the meeting lasted that long because the minutes of the previous three meetings held on August 12,17 and 24 were read and adopted.“Many issues of utmost importance to the state development were thoroughly discussed. We have resolved that executive meeting should hold every Wednesday”. The commissioner disclosed that the fund is being established as part of  government’s  efforts to ensure the protection of life and property and make the state more investor friendly.

He said the security fund would be used to  assist security agencies in the state through procurement of equipment, vehicles and other logistics.“After a thorough review of security situation in the country and rising cases of crime in Osun State especially recent incidents of vehicle theft, the  government ratified the establishment of Security Trust Fund”, he disclosed. The government also set up a seven member committee, healed by Deputy Governor Grace Titi Laoye-Tomori to represent the state at the Joint Committee of Oyo and Osun states that would  find speedy and amicable resolution to the  crisis rocking LAUTECH.

The commissioner  revealed that the cabinet also agreed to begin preparation for the maiden edition of a two- day Osun Carnival which holds in November: “The carnival is to showcase the potential of the state. Also, the two-day carnival is to mark the one year of this administration.”

He said between  over 5,000 people are expected at the carnival, saying the event would further boost the economy of the state.
