Not satisfied with the verdict of the Election Petition Tribunal which upheld the victory of Governor Abiola Ajimobi in the last gubernatorial election in Oyo State, the Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] has headed for the Court of Appeal to challenge the judgment of the tribunal.
The party had challenged Ajimobi’s victory based on his alleged dual citizenship of both Nigeria and the United States of America (USA).
The PDP had prayed the tribunal to upturn the election by ordering a fresh election.
The chairman of the lower trial tribunal, Justice Muazu Abdulkadir Pindinga, however, said the PDP’s petition lacked merit and awarded N10, 000 cost in favour of Governor Ajimobi, the Action Congress of Nigeria and the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC).
The Secretary of the party in the state, Bashiru Akanbi who dropped the hint at the weekend, added that the party was determined to pursue its case against alleged dual citizenship of Senator Aiimobi to a logical conclusion as stipulated in line with the laws of the land and the 2011Electoral Acts.
He said: Nothing will stop PDP as a party that believes much in the rule of law from pursuing the election petition as well as protecting the nation’s growing democracy through the Appeal”.
“I wish to inform you gentlemen of the press that PDP has already filed its appeal against the judgment of the Oyo state governorship election petition tribunal which dismisses our petition against the election of Senator Abiola Ajimobi as the governor of Oyo State. Our party is determined to purse the case to the logical conclusion as stipulated by the law of the land’’.
He challenged the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) administration in the state to brace up and take the act of governing the state as a serious business, saying, for now, Governor Ajimobi administration remains a total failure in Oyo state.
Alhaji Akanbi maintained that as at present, it was glaring that Governor Ajimobi has clearly shown that the ACN-led administration in the state lacked direction going by its continuous erection of ‘‘signposts ‘’on road construction and rehabilitation around the state without any road either constructed or rehabilitated to back up the erected signposts.
