PDP, APC in war of words over Enugu LG polls

ENUGU State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) counterpart yesterday hurled blames at each other over a planned shift of local government election.

APC in Enugu said it was against setting up of caretaker committees to run the affairs of local councils in the state.

State Publicity Secretary, Mrs. Kate Ofor, who made the party’s position known in a statement issued in Enugu yesterday said the party was opposed to the proposed caretaker committees “on the grounds that it is unconstitutional, ultra vires and goes against the gains of timeless best tenets of democracy.”

But, in a swift reaction, the state chapter of the PDP said APC’s statement was mischievous.

Speaking through its Publicity Secretary, Dr Okey Eze, the party said APC lacked the moral ground to speak on the matter in the sense that most states controlled by the APC administer council affairs through caretaker committees.

He said there was nothing constitutionally wrong with the setting up of the committees under the present circumstances, which the state found itself.

Eze called on the APC to appreciate the new tempo of democratic experiment in the state as championed by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi aimed at advancing good governance in an atmosphere of peace, civility, and the rule of law.

Across the border, PDP also engaged the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) on the same issue in Anambra State.

PDP chairman in Nnewi North Local Government Area, Maduka Okoye, vowed to mobilise for legal action if Governor Willie Obiano fails to conduct council polls due for this month.

But an All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) chieftain, a security expert and Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of All Way Global Digital Security Limited, Nnewi, Dr Jeff Okeke, said it was nonsensical to talk about election in Anambra when pro-Biafra groups had over -heated the state.
