PDP convention: Women group back Patience Jonathan’s push for female PDP deputy chair
Women Politics Wednesday, March 14th, 2012The Women for True Democracy (WTD), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has expressed support for moves by the First Lady, Mrs Patience Jonathan, to have a woman emerge as the deputy national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming national convention of the party.
The WTD, a group of women professionals and politicians, said in a statement that, for the party to remain relevant in the political space, it should reserve the posts of deputy national chairman and the national organising secretary respectively for women.
President of WTD, Dr Ngozi Onyewuchi, said in Abuja, that the group resolved to make its resolve public after a meeting in Abuja.
It said that the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan would be better served, if women were strategically placed in the party’s hierarchy.
The group stated: “The president needs to be supported in achieving the government’s transformational agenda. He has appointed some women to manage some key sectors of the economy and they are all performing creditably and marvellously.
