PDP produced president rejected by his people –Dickson
Bayelsa, Headlines, Party Politics, Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP), State News Tuesday, August 13th, 2013The Chairman of the PeoplesDemocratic Party National Reconciliation Committee, Mr. Seriake Dickson, on Tuesday said it would be wrong to accuse the party of being a religious or a regional party.
He said it was only the PDP that had the capacity to produce a president, which he said it did in 1999, even when his zone did not support him.
The governor spoke while addressing leaders and key members of the PDP in 13 states being controlled by the opposition at Wadata Plaza, headquarters of the party, in Abuja.
He said, “Somebody even won the Presidency in 1999 and got the support of the party even though his zone, the South-West, did not support him. The party supported him and made him the leader.
“In 2011, a President from the minority emerged through the PDP. This is a party that is neither a regional nor a religious party.”
He described the PDP as a national party that had risen far above ethnic and religious sentiments. Dickson stressed the need for members to channel their grievances through the proper party channels.
Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the party, Dr. Bamanga Tukur, has assured women members of the party of more slots in both elective and selective offices.
Tukur made this promise on Tuesday in Abuja at the party’s national secretariat during a solidarity visit by the PDP National Woman Leader, state women leaders, zonal women leaders and women members of the National Executive Committee.
Tukur said the party was bringing in women to participate in all areas.
He said, “People are asking for women to be given 30 per cent; to me, I believe you need more. We are going to bring more and more women in. Is there any man who is not born by a woman?”
He advised the women to brace to the challenges ahead, saying “the PDP, being the biggest party means biggest responsibility.”
He added, “We have to work hard, we have to be focused to earn result in whatever we are doing.”
Speaking earlier, the Acting National Woman Leader, Mrs. Oyibo Nwaneri, had said the women were on a solidarity visit to thank Tukur for what he had been doing and to encourage him to do more.
She said, “We want to let you know sir, that women are under represented and women are asking for more slots. The national ex-official women members, the state and zonal women leaders are the ones working at the grassroots.”
