Police arrest 11 suspected robbers, kidnappers in Rivers
Headlines, Nigerian Police, Rivers, State News Thursday, February 20th, 2014The Rivers State Police Command on Wednesday paraded 11 suspected armed robbers and two kidnappers in Port Harcourt.
The suspects, according to the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Tunde Ogunsakin, were arrested during various operations carried out by policemen in the state.
Ogunsakin who narrated how one of the operations was carried out told newsmen that a group of hoodlums opened fire on some of his men that were on patrol around Ogbunabali axis of the state capital.
He explained that the policemen returned fire immediately, adding that the gang of armed robbers were overwhelmed by the superior firepower of security operatives.
According to him, “The incident prompted the police to immediately engage them in an exchange of gunfire. The gang was, however, overwhelmed by the superior fire power of our men who displayed their resilience in the course of the gun exchange.”
Ogunsakin added that the hoodlums ran away from the scene and left behind a grey-coloured Toyota Highlander jeep with registration number LSR 825 AP.
He said, “One Chinoso Ihesinor was arrested while the sum of N1 million was recovered from him. On Monday, February 17, the operatives of the command acting on a tip-off arrested a suspected kidnapper identified as David Francis.
“The suspect was arrested at Fidelity Bank along Trans-Amadi Road while trying to withdraw a ransom meant to augment the ransom fee for the release of a victim that was recently kidnapped at Akwa Ibom State.
“He (Francis) later led the operatives from the Rivers State Police Command to the hideout of his accomplice, Edwin Ekpeyong, who was arrested by armed men from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.”
