Police recover N3.5m from suspected kidnappers in Osun
Headlines, Osun, State News Saturday, December 24th, 2011Two weeks after a popular Ife-based petrol dealer, Alhaji Popoola Ogundoyin was kidnapped, detectives from the Osun State Police Command have freed the victim and recovered N3.5m from the suspected kidnappers.
Addressing a news conference in Osogbo on Friday, Osun State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Solomon Olusegun, said the family of the victim had given N5m to the suspects without the knowledge of the police.
Olusegun said the petrol dealer was kidnapped on December 8, 2011 at about 7 pm in front of his Ile-Ife residence by four men in a red Volks Wagon Golf car.
He said the kidnappers initially demanded N5bn from the family before reducing it to N5m.
Olusegun said the victim was freed by a combined team of policemen and vigilance men, who alerted the police to the activities of the suspects.
The police commissioner said investigation led detectives to Ubahekwe community in Ihiala Local Government Council in Anambra State and Ovim community in Isukwuator Local Government Council, where the masterminds of the kidnapping were arrested.
He said N3,569,020 was recovered from the suspects, whom he noted had made confessional statements.
Olusegun said that two suspects who bore dynamite in Ile-Ife, Osun State, on December 15, 2011 had been arrested.
He said one of the suspects took to his heels while the other, Ismaila Garo, who was arrested, claimed the dynamite was to be used for blasting rocks inside wells.
