Police rescue 7 kids from traffickers in Onitsha
Anambra, Headlines, State News Tuesday, June 14th, 2011The Police in the commercial city of Onitsha, Anambra State has rescued seven children from the hands of suspected child traffickers and arrested two suspects. Though the Police Spokesman in the state, Mr. Emeka Chukwuemeka said the matter has not been reported to the Command, an eyewitness who pleaded anonymity said the incident happened at a hotel in Onitsha.
According to the eyewitness, the two suspects, a man and a woman came to the hotel in a Mercedes 200 salon Benz car with the seven children dressed in school uniform.
According to Daily Sun source, trouble started, when the suspects who pretended to be couple wanted to book for lodging accommodation in the hotel and was given a form to fill in their particulars.
The source disclosed that the fake couple felt uncomfortable with that arrangement and insisted that they should be checked into the hotel without filling in their particulars, adding that an argument ensued between the hotel staffers and the suspects.
He said that when the suspects refused to fill in their particulars, one of the hotel staffers felt suspicious and alerted the Onitsha Central Police Station through an SMS message.
It was gathered that the Obanye street vigilance group, which was nearby on sighting the man fleeing from the approaching police patrol vehicle, sensed that something was wrong. They reportedly apprehended and took him back to the Police.
His female accomplice was apprehended at the lobby of the hotel while the seven children where rescued and taken to the Police station.
The kids were aged between four and seven years, the source further disclosed.
