Police uncover baby factory in Anambra – Recover 3 babies, 1 sold for N400,000

Police in Anambra State yesterday raided a motherless babies home in Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area where three babies were allegedly recovered.

Daily Sun gathered that the Proprietress of the home, Mrs. Ifeoma Okolo, allegedly escaped arrest with eight babies and about 20 pregnant young girls when the police raided the home yesterday.
However, the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, after the raid, recovered three babies when the ministry’s Director of Child Development, Mr. Emeka Ejide led his team alongside a team of detectives from the Anambra State Police Force CID division for the raid.

The home, which is located at the Emic Foam Road has a big warehouse allegedly housing numerous rooms where it was discovered that about 20 pregnant teenagers were housed. Daily Sun also gathered that one of the inmates of the home, Miracle, a three-year-old boy was allegedly sold at N400,000 to a woman desperately looking for a baby boy. According to one of the detectives who pleaded anonymity, the recent raid on the home was as a result of the controversies trailing the sale of the baby boy, which, he said, did not go down well with both the management of the home and the purported buyer.

Meanwhile, reacting through mobile phone, the owner of the motherless babies home, Mrs. Okolo, said she went to the hospital with five babies to get medical attention for them. She also disclosed that she had gone to Nkpor after which she went to Onitsha but did not say anything about the pregnant girls harboured in the home, adding that the home was a genuine one.

Also reacting, one of the staff of the home, Mrs. Elizabeth Okoroji denied knowledge of such deals of selling babies and keeping pregnant young girls in the home and said she was new in the home.
Daily Sun reported that the two babies were taken to Tenderlove Motherless Babies Home, Awka, while the other one was taken to Model Motherless Babies Home also in Awka while police said they were on the trail of the home owner.

Speaking to journalists, the Anambra State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Ego Uzoezie reaffirmed the commitment of the ministry to clean up the mess by those running illegal homes in the state.
