Protesters barricade road to Rivers assembly

Port Harcourt – About 2000 placards carrying youths protest alleged plan by governor Nyesom Wike to dissolve the elected council executive in 22 local government areas sworn in by former governor Chibuike Amaechi on May 25 before he bowed out on May 29.
At press time the protesters had barricaded the ever busy Moscow road leading to the Rivers state House of Assembly in Port Harcourt.
Vehicles were being turned back because of the blockade mounted by the protesters on the road
Chairman, Degema local government area, Mr Sogbeye Eli who is among the council Chairmen leading the protest said they were out to resist what he dubbed attempt to dissolve elected councils in the state using the state House of Assembly.
Recalled that governor Wike Monday evening dissolved the Professor Augustine Ahiazu led Rivers state Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC that conducted the council election on May 23 over allegations of abuse of office.
It is not clear if the House could convened today with the development in front of the complex .
Some police officers were seen talking with some of the council chairmen leading the protest
