Protesters Storm Kano’s Silver Jubilee
Kano, State News Friday, January 6th, 2012
KANO, January 04, (THEWILL) – Hundreds of youths Wednesday in Kano converged at the ever busy Zaria Road by the famous Silver Jubilee roundabout and totally barricaded the area, thereby causing serious traffic gridlock as mass protests continued over the federal government’s transfer of subsidy on petroleum products.
Although the protest was conducted in a peaceful manner, the protesters which included Arewa Citizens Action for Change vowed to remain at the roundabout until government responds to calls by many Nigerians to restore subsidy on petrol it removed.
Passers-by and commercial motorcyclists were forced to join the protests.
Speaking to reporters, one of the coordinators of the protest, Comrade Sani Darma of Arewa Citizens Action for Change said they would remain at the Silver Jubilee roundabout until federal government rescinds its decision on fuel subsidy.
He said the action of the federal government is not only counterproductive but “will affect not only those of us now but our generations yet unborn which is why we are fighting the injustice now,” he remarked.
“There is no going back, subsidy must be restored, we are determined to continue to fight until the government sees reason and make a u-turn.”
