Resource control: Ijaw Congress knocks Lamido

THE Ijaw National Congress has slammed the Lamido of Adamawa, Dr. Muhammadu Barkindo Mustapha, over his position on the demand for resource control by the South-South geo-political zone.

Mustapha had during a plenary at the National Conference proposed a stringent condition for the demand for a 100 per cent resource control by oil producing states to be accepted.

The Lamido of Adamawa, who made a veiled reference to the people of Niger Delta region, specifically said that those clamouring for resource control should be ready to lose their lands in the Federal Capital Territory.

Reacting to Mustapha’s position, the INC spokesman, Mr. Victor Borubo, explained that the issue of resource control was the right of the people of the South-South geo-political zone.

Borubo, who spoke in a telephone interview with our correspondent on Thursday, pointed out that the issue of resource control should not be tied to any condition, adding that the matter was natural and not subject to any individual approval.

Describing Lamido’s stance on resource control as unfortunate and an attempt to draw attention to himself, the INC spokesman urged members of the conference not to take the statement of the traditional ruler on resource control seriously.

“We, the South-South people, are not asking for resource control. We are saying this because we know that it is a matter of right and the South-South people are going to get it. The truth is that resource control is natural and not subject to any individual’s approval,” he said.

Explaining that some Nigerians from all parts of the country own lands in Abuja, Borubo wondered why the Lamido of Adamawa would insist that those calling for resource control (South-South) should relinquish their property in Abuja.

He, however, called on President Goodluck Jonathan to caution the monarch  or recall him from the National Conference if he (Lamido) continued to fan the embers of crisis at the confab.
