Robbers lay siege to Lagos-Ibadan expressway

In the last three days, commuters and other road users plying the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, were subjected to all sorts of agony through the activities of armed robbers.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the people plying the road had lost valuables worth millions of naira to men of the underworld, who had taken over the road.

It was learnt that since the dismantling of police checkpoints on  highways across the country, the activities of  armed robbers had been on the increase, especially on the Lagos-Ibadan express road.

A victim, who identified himself as Abbey, said he had a terrible experience when he was coming from Lagos on Monday.

He said robbers were operating in 10 different areas between Sagamu and Ogere in Ogun State.

According to him, most of the robbers were dressed in mobile police uniform and were armed with guns and other dangerous weapons.

Abbey disclosed that  the robbers subjected their victims to thorough search during which they were dispossessed of their money and other valuables.

He said their mode of operation was that some of them would hide in the bush while others would stay on the road pretending to be assisting the people by telling them that robbers were operating in front and asking them to park.

“Immediately you park, you will see them coming from the bush with dangerous weapons to rob people of their valuables.

“When we got to Ogere, we saw people lying on the ground. I cannot say if they were dead or not but those who refused to cooperate with them were dealt with,” Abbey recalled.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Oyo State Police Command, DSP Bisi Okuwobi, said that there was no report of armed robbery incident on the road, especially within the jurisdiction of the state.
