Robbers take over Warri/Effurun in Delta
Delta, Headlines, State News Thursday, December 29th, 2011Uneasy calm pervaded the oil city of Warri yesterday as armed bandits’ raided two vital spots in the metropolis. Daily Sun gathered that the hoodlums who have been terrorizing the twin-city of Warri and Effurun since the last two weeks yesterday stormed a popular chemist store and wreaked havoc in the area. Eye-witness account had it that the robbers numbering about 10 stormed the store and shot into the air to scare away any intruder.
The robbers, it was further gathered, carted away an expensive laptop with unspecified sum of money and shot one of the workers and drove away in two separate vehicles.“When they came in, we initially thought they were customers until they shot into the air and ordered us to lie face down before going away with their loots”, said one of the workers who declined to give his name. Similarly, another robbery incident occurred at a wine store located along the major Eboh Street by Amaforitse junction.
Daily Sun was told that the hoodlums stormed the wine shop at about 2pm and went way with various kinds of drinks and cash. However, unconfirmed report further told The SUN that two persons were killed by stray bullets as the robbers shot sporadically into the air with their AK 47 riffle. Investigation however showed that both Warri and Effurun, especially the oil city have been taken over by hoodlums as no day passes without one or two robbery incident occurring in the thickly populated areas.
Meanwhile prices of foodstuff and transportation have increased tremendously following the spate of robbery incident and scarcity of petroleum products. Investigation showed that people who used to bring foodstuff to Warri are scared stiff of coming to the oil city which has been over taken by hoodlums of all shades. Secondly, there are noticeable scarcity of petroleum products, especially kerosene and fuel whose pump price have gone up astronomically.
For example, a litre of kerosene now sell at N150 while that of fuel sells at N100.
