Saraki: How to Grow Nigeria’s Economy
Kwara, National Politics, State News Saturday, July 16th, 2011Immediate past governor of Kwara State, Senator Bukola Saraki has said for Nigeria to be great, the country has to move away from its present status of a mono-product economy.
Saraki, who stated this in Abuja when playing host to a delegation of Kwara State students from the Federal Polytechnic Offa who visited him at the National Assembly, said the only way out is to diversify the economy and create the enabling environment that will ensure that people invest in the several untapped sectors like agriculture, solid minerals, tourism and manufacturing, where he said, ample opportunities currently exist.
The senator representing Kwara Central cited the example of United Arab Emirate, which also has substantial oil reserves like Nigeria, saying, “But that is not what is sustaining their economy. That is why we have always advocated the diversification of the economy and that is why in Kwara State we focused from Day One on agriculture”.
He said: “Nigeria has to move away from where oil is still accounting for 30 per cent of our GDP. We have to look at other areas such as manufacturing, tourism, agriculture and agro-allied services to increase our GDP.
