Bayelsa: Six Feared Killed in Violence
Bayelsa, State News Friday, January 7th, 2011AN orgy of violence yesterday swept across Bayelsa State as six people were feared killed in a clash between rival political groups. Trouble started at Port Harcourt where young men suspected to be hoodlums waylaid the convoy of the Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Bayelsa, Timi Alaibe at the airport. The suspected hoodlums reportedly stabbed six of Alaibe’s political associates to death.
The state Police Public Relation in Bayelsa State, Mr. Uguabo-Emfpoe, (ASP) confirmed the incident. The community said that 14 suspects have been handed over to the JTF.
Alaibe later said that the bandits were sponsored but that the action would not deter him from contesting against the incumbent governor. He asked his associates not to be discouraged.
Meanwhile, a nine year-old child was yesterday killed when suspected hoodlums clashed in Ayonuga Street, Off Fadeyi/Jibowu area of Lagos.
Investigations by The Guardian revealed that the battle for supremacy between the groups started more than a week ago. Although, the killing of the child was said to have been perpetrated when the crisis broke out, residents of the area alleged it was unreported because of the sponsors of the suspects, whom they guessed were highly connected Nigerians.
