SNG gives EFCC 7-day ultimatum to arrest Sylva

AS the allegations of gross financial mismanagement and fraud levelled against the government of former governor of Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylva, continue to generate ripples, the Save Nigeria Group (SNG), on Wednesday, gave the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other security agencies seven-day ultimatum to effect his arrest, as a prelude to face justice.

A report by 11-man financial management review committee headed by Mr Timi Alaibe, which was constituted by the Bayelsa State governor, Honour-able Henry Seriake Dickson, had accused the former governor of frittering away over N660 billion within his five-year tenure.

The report, which was submitted to Governor Dickson on Monday, also indicated that Sylva allegedly indulged in financial recklessness, culminating in the N207 billion debts owed by the state to various institutions.

But, after going through the report of the committee and the defence of Sylva’s media aide, Mr Doifie Ola, SNG contended that the former governor had a case to answer and tasked the EFCC and other security agencies to fish him out of his hideout, so that he could answer allegations of financial misdeeds allegedly perpetrated by his administration.

In a communiqué it issued after its meeting in Yenagoa, on Wednesday, SNG threatened to stage a protest in the state and Abuja if, after seven days, the anti-graft agency and security operatives failed to produce the former governor.

The communiqué, endorsed by the state coordinator of the group, Mr Tony Ile, said the Alaibe-led committee report was an indication that Sylva and his aides had bungled the future of the state.
