Students on The Rampage in Ilorin Over Bursary

STUDENTS of various institutions from Kwara State staged a violent protest on Friday holding motorists to ransom over non-payment of their bursaries.

The students reportedly destroyed private and public property during the protest in Ilorin, the state capital.

They said they embarked on the protest to press home their demand from the state government, stressing that their bursaries had not been paid up till date.

The students, who assembled at Post Office, took over Murtala Muhammed Way, Post Office area and Challenge, blocking the road and distrupting vehicular movement.

One of the victims, whose car screen was smashed, condemned the attitude of the students as he called on government to punish all those behind the violence to serve as a deterrent to others.

The state Commissioner for Information and Communication, Mr. Ben Duntoye, while expressing disappoinment over the act, noted that Governor Bukola Saraki had already appropriated the bursary fund for release next week, adding that the government was committed to educational development of the state.

Meanwhile, no fewer than 20 of the students have been arrested by the state police command and will be charged to court on Monday.

Commissioner of Police, Mr. Peter Gana, who was represented by the spokesman, Mr. Dabo Ezekiel, said investigation had commenced on the cause of incident, urging members of the public to remain calm as the police were on top of the situation.
