Traffic light violators to pay fines in Enugu
Enugu, State News Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011Enugu State Commissioner for Transport and Capital Territory Development, Mr John Egbo, has said that traffic light violators in the state will now pay fines.
Egbo told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Enugu Wednesday that “we are going to make the fine huge so that it will act as a deterrent to others; we will make it N50,000 and to be paid on the spot.”
Egbo said it was a way of monitoring the infrastructure in the state, noting that setting examples with violators would help to preserve them.
He said: “The state is working toward monitoring and bringing offenders to book. The type of traffic lights being installed in Enugu is the first of its kind and the first intelligent traffic light ever installed in the country.
“We will force the money out from the offender by taking vehicles into safe custody. They will only be released on settlement of the fine.”
According to the commissioner, it will be a way of instilling decency into the lives of residents.
He, however, enjoined Enugu residents to obey traffic lights in order to ease congestion and collisions.
