American Politics, Headlines, Top Stories Thursday, March 12th, 2020Written by New Nigerian Politics Staff Writer – Washington Bureau – In a sweeping response to the Corona virus threat, the US President, Donald J. Trump, announced on Wednesday night from the Oval Office, that he is suspending all travels from Europe to the United States with the exception of the UK for the next 30 days. This action the president indicated was necessary to slow the spread of the virus. While the virus started in Wuhan, China, where hundreds have died, Europe has seen increasing cases of infection with Italy being the most hit nation in the continent where the entire country of 60 million has been put on lockdown.
The ban does not impact Americans returning home from Europe or cargo shipments. The president indicated that the ban will be reevaluated as the situation changes. It will be recalled that at the beginning of the epidemic, US placed a travel ban on China to prevent the introduction of the virus in the United States. There have been over 1,000 cases reported in the US with 26 deaths. On Wednesday, the United Nations declared it a pandemic, the highest designation. Over 60 countries have been impacted thus far by COVID-19.wp_posts
