U.S. removes Nigeria from religious freedom list ahead of Blinken visit
Africa & World Politics, American Politics Friday, November 19th, 2021(NNP) The US government on Wednesday removed Nigeria from the religious freedom list ahead of the state visit by US Secretary of State, Tony Blinken. Blinken who is on an Africa tour is due in Abuja where he is scheduled to meet with Nigerian officials including President Muhammadu Buhari and give a speech on US-Africa policy. The sudden removal of Nigeria from the list drew sharp and immediate criticisms from rights groups and US Commission for International Religious Freedom, all of whom insist that Nigeria belongs to that group along with Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iran, China, Russia, North Korea, Myanmar and others. There has been no reaction from either governments on this development. Nigeria was added to the list in 2020 following systemic killings of Christians particularly in the norther parts of the country.
