Senator Andy Uba of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was Wednesday declared winner of the Anambra South senatorial district re-run election, which was conducted on March 20.
To emerge victorious, Uba polled 42,802 votes to beat his closest rival, Hon. Chuma Nzeribe of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), who scored 40,678 votes to come second.
Other parties which participated in the election and their results included the Accord Party (AP) 27, ANC 46, ADC 18, ACP 15, All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) 112, Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) 29, Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) 11, HDP 24, Labour Party (LP) 93, and Peoples Progressive Party (PPP) 90.
Declaring the result at the Nnewi zonal collation centre of the district, the Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Eugene Aniam, of the University of Calabar, said Uba had by the votes he garnered satisfied the requirement of the law and therefore had won and was returned.
The election was however sequel to the Court of Appeal, Enugu, Division’s decision on December 22, 2011 which had nullified Uba’s victory in the April 9, 2011 National Assembly election following a petition by Nzeribe alleging irregularities in the manner Uba was returned.
Reacting to the result, Uba described his re- election as the triumph of justice and democracy.
He said: “I thank God and my good people for this great honour of giving me their mandate. I feel honoured and humbled by this great gesture. This is victory for justice and democracy. My victory has deepened democracy in Anambra State and Nigeria as a whole. I thank my constituency for staying steadfast. Despite threats, intimidation and attempts to compromise them, they stood their ground and God has made their dream a reality. This is a new dawn that the people’s will would always prevail. I thank God for making this day a reality, he alone is worth to be praised.
“This victory has strengthened my faith in democracy and made me more resolute to serve my people. I want to assure my people that the dividends of democracy would not elude them. This is the beginning of so many good things to come. We have proven all our opponents and critics wrong.
They can see that power comes from God and it is meant to better the lot of the masses.
Also, APGA National Chairman, Chief Victor Umeh, told THISDAY that in as much as his party lost, they would retire to the drawing board to review what transpired at the election.
