UK Justice Ministry partners Nigeria’s judiciary on terrorism

The nation’s judiciary and the United Kingdom Justice Ministry have commenced talks on the possibility of judicial cooperation on terrorism and terrorism-related cases.

Top on the list is the possibility of training selected Nigerian judges particularly in the area of case management, a relatively new genre in the judicial process and an area in which the UK judiciary is deemed relatively more experienced in.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Dahiru Musdapher, gave this indication on Tuesday in his chamber when a three-man counter terrorism delegation from the UK paid him a visit.

The team was led by Ms. Wendy Hart from the British Ministry of Justice accompanied by Giles Lever, Deputy High Commissioner in Nigeria and Mr Alex Agbamu, from that country’s Directorate of Public Prosecution.

The visit came on the heels of UK’s Prime Minister’s earlier visit to Nigeria during which he and President Jonathan agreed in principle on the need for strengthening mutual cooperation between the two countries especially in the areas of preemption, disruption, counter and management of terrorism.

and terrorism related matters of which the judicial due process is key .

Whenever sealed, the mutual cooperation agreement is envisaged to entail a select team of Nigerian judges regularly meeting their terrorism-savvy counterparts in the UK to rub minds on terrorism-case handling now globally handled with the utmost judicial tact and brevity.
