WAFCON 2022: Super Falcons pick up 2023 World Cup ticket with a defeat of Cameroon and a semi-finals berth
Headlines, Soccer, Sports Thursday, July 14th, 2022
(NNP) Unlike the uninspired Super Eagles, the Super Falcons Thursday qualified for the 2023 World Cup jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand with a defeat of Cameroon in the quarter-finals in the ongoing Women’s African Cup of Nations championship in Morocco. The Falcons who have clinched a semi-finals berth, have also picked up one of four World Cup tickets reserved for the four semi-finalists. After a scoreless first half, Spain-based Rasheedat Ajibade opened the scoring in the 54th minute with a smooth header behind a Cameroonian defender after a perfect cross from American-born Gotham FC (New York) forward, 28-year-old Ifeoma Onumunu. The match ended on that score line after a fierce effort from the Cameroonians that proved barren. The Falcons will be play host Morocco in the semi-finals on July 18 in Rabat. The Moroccans made history with a first-time semi-finals berth and picking up one of five tickets for the 2023 World Cup.
