Women minister condemns Abia varsity rape incident

The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajia Zainab Maina, has condemned the recent rape incident in Abia State University, as published on the front page of The Punch newspaper of September 20, 2011

Maina said the act was not only barbaric, callous, inhuman and highly unacceptable, but also a gross violation of the human rights of women.

She said the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has always been at the forefront on the campaign against  violence on women and girls.

The minister said “rape, by whoever and under whatever circumstances, is definitely a very grievous human right abuse which must be investigated and punished.”

She called on law enforcement agencies to fully investigate the issue, with a view to ensuring that justice was done.

Hajia Maina noted the need to re-visit the issue of domesticating the convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women,  so as to protect “our women and girls.”
