200 passengers escape death as cows derail train

Residents of Kakuri, a suburb of Kaduna metropolis was yesterday thrown into confusion, when the Kaduna township train lost control and veered off its track, killing 12 cows.

The incident almost led to a disaster, as the train lost control and it took the dexterity of the drivers to bring the train carrying over 200 people under control.
According to a witness account, the incident, which took place at the boundary between Kakuri and Barnawa was caused by a herd of cows trying to cross the rail, but got confused on hearing the hooting of the train.
The development led to a traffic congestion on the busy Kachia Road leading to the station round about, as motorist and passersby try to inquire about what actually transpired.

According to an eyewitness who identified himself as James Sani, “the cows were coming from the Danbo International end of the rail and going towards Queen Amina College when panic and confusion made the train to collide with them.”
The animals numbering over 15 immediately scattered in all directions, even as the eyewitness told our reporter that they counted about 12 dead cows on the spot.

Confirming the report to newsmen, the DPO of Kakuri District Police Station, Paul Adama whose station is about 150 meters from the scene of the accident said his only joy was that no life was lost in the accident.
He said that only the train was damaged and it would take the engineers some time to put it back on track.
