3 killed, 7 injured as gunmen strike in Lagos

Three persons were at the weekend shot dead while seven others suffered gunshot wounds, when gunmen opened fire on them in Somolu area of Lagos. The motive of the killers is not yet known, but the police are working on the theory that the killings may have been politically motivated.

The killed and injured were said to be sitting in front of the National Union of Road Transport Workers’ (NURTW), office at Bajulaiye Bus-stop, when the gunmen struck. The killers, believed to be seven in number, took away the corpse of one of the victims.

Daily Sun reliably gathered that members of the seven-man gang who were wearing white T-shirts with inscription, “Team Lagos” armed with sophisticated guns stormed the scene in a red Honda Accord car.

An eyewitness, Akin Ogundare, told Daily Sun he was sitting opposite NURTW office, when a red Honda Accord parked and some men, numbering about seven armed with sophisticated weapons, opened fire on the people sitting in front of the office. He said immediately he witnessed what was happening, he took to his heels. He said the killer-squad also started firing sporadically at anyone on sight.

According to him, when the dust settled, three persons were killed and seven others injured.
He gave the names of two dead ones as Ramoni Ogunsanya and Anthony Ogbonna, adding that the other dead one was carried away by the hoodlums. He said the injured were rushed to a hospital at Ladilak, Somolu.

However, a police source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the killing may have been politically motivated. “I don’t think the gunmen were armed robbers because they did not rob anyone. Rather, they opened fire on anyone on sight sitting infront of NURTW office.” Meanwhile, the state Commissioner of Police (CP), Mr. Yakubu Alkali, who paid a visit to the scene has ordered the State Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) to fish out the killers.
