9 suspected pirates, others arrested
Akwa Ibom, Headlines, State News Sunday, January 29th, 2012The joint police and military patrol has apprehended nine suspects in an effort to curb the activities of sea pirates and other criminals in Akwa Ibom waterways and creeks. Parading the suspects on Friday in Uyo, the Commissioner of Police, Mr Solomon Arase, said that they were arrested in collaboration with sister security services along the creeks of Mbo.
“These are the men who have been terrorising the creeks and waterways of this state but they ran out of luck this week.’’ The police commissioner gave their names as John Okpoture, Joel Andrew, John Kolobos and Taraibi Hippo. Others are Francis Yadofriya, Zebolom Williams, Ebifa Jefter, Staven Samon and Lambat Godgift.
Arase listed items recovered from the suspects to include 13 empty magazines of AK47 rifle, three propellers of outboard engine and eight trousers of camouflage uniform, among other items.
He also paraded one Abel Dominic of Nsit Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom for impersonating a lieutenant colonel in the Nigerian Army. Dominic was said to have defrauded many unsuspecting victims of huge sums of money with the promise of giving them jobs in the army.
