INEC seeks additional N45.39bn for 2011 poll

The Independent National Electoral Commission is seeking an additional N45.39bn for capital and recurrent expenditure in 2011.

This amount is contained in the 2011 budget forwarded by President Goodluck Jonathan to the National Assembly for approval.

Earlier, the commission had received N87bn for the purchase of Direct Data Capturing Machines for voter registration and related services.

A breakdown of the sum shows that the electoral body intends to spend N38.3bn and N7. 11bn on recurrent and capital projects respectively.

Registered contractors also have a cause to smile as INEC has provided for the procurement of goods and services.

The commission will spend N607.7m on the procurement of additional vehicles; N135.6m on fuel and N136.5m on vehicle maintenance.

New sets of furniture will cost INEC N69.7m; new generators, N78.1m; sundry security equipment, N128.1m; and security services, N90m.

The INEC also proposed N315.4 for advertising and publicity and N40m for the purchase of newspapers and magazines.

According to the budget, the election body plans to spend N90.27m on information technology consultants; and N135.15m on the maintenance of information and technology equipment in its offices.

It also intends to spend N135.6m on the procurement of computer consumables and office stationeries and N136.5m on payments to financial consultants.

About N13. 4bn is earmarked for salaries and wages; N54m for legal services; N77.3m for honorarium and sitting allowance; N63. 1m for refreshment and meals; N18.m for welfare packages; N90m for official homes; and N45.3m for telephone services.

International travels and related items for INEC officials is to cost tax payers N226.78m while local travels, transport training and other related items will gulp N360.6m.

Local training will gulp N225m ; international training, N270.6m; “subscription to professional bodies, N72.8m; staff medical expenses, N90m and drugs and medical supplies, N90. 5m. INEC is also proposing to spend N67.9m on postage and courier services.wp_posts
