Emenike: I had to run for my life
Headlines, Soccer, Sports Sunday, July 31st, 2011
Emmanuel Emenike has told KickOffNigeria.com that he was hounded out of Turkey and left because he was not sure what was coming next.
Emenike, 24, was traded to Russian side Spartak Moscow by Fenerbahce for 10 million Euros, just two months after joining the Turkish champions for a million euros more.
The trade came as a bit of a surprise coming as it is before he had even kicked a ball in anger for Fener, but Emenike says he had no choice, as events in Turkey seemed to indicate that some people had something in for him.
“First they said I came in a boat,” he began. “As if that was not enough, they accused me of age cheating. Now, they arrested and detained me over something I knew nothing about.
“I didn’t know what was coming next and I didn’t want to live in fear of my life, so I told Fenerbahce I wanted to leave.”
Emenike returned to Nigeria after signing for his new club, and says he is ready for the challenge Russia presents.
“I’m still young in this game and I am learning everyday. Right now, I just want to focus on football and help my club by scoring goals.”
Emenike was arrested and charged to court as part of the widespread investigations into match fixing allegations that have rocked Turkish football in the last month, but was released from detention when no evidence was found against him.
