FG committed to S’East roads –Minister

The Federal Government has said it is not happy with the state of federal roads in the South-east and will subsequently pay full attention to roads in the zone.

This was revealed yesterday by the Federal Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolememen, while inspecting the Onitsha-Enugu dual carriage way at Onitsha axis in the company with Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State.

The minister said he came to the state on the express directives of Mr. President , following relentless efforts and pressure by the Anambra State governor. He assured the people of the state that President Jonathan was committed to restoring all federal infrastructure in the zone and assured that a radical transformation on roads in the zone would be witnessed henceforth.

Onolememen also said his ministry and the Minstry of Finance were working in close collaboration as directed by the minister for the delivery of the Second Niger Bridge.
Furthermore, the minister directed the Consolidated Construction Company (CCC), handling the Onitsha Axis of the Onitsha-Owerri road, to immediately embark on palliative measures on the impassable spots, while construction was going on.

Anambra State Governor, Mr Peter Obi, who was visibly happy over the development, said he was confident that the present Minister of Works would be the last official he would inspect the road with, having done so with three past ministers.

Obi said he would personally supervise the progress of work on the road. He also brought to the minister’s attention other federal roads the state government was doing, viz, Atani-Ogwikpele Road, Oba- Nnewi Road, Nkpor-Amawbia Road, among others.

Anambra State Government had earlier appealed to the Federal Government to grant her permission to fund the Onitsha-Enugu dual carriage road from Head bridge and be paid back thereafter.
