Pro-Jonathan group launches South East chapters

A Pro-Goodluck Jonathan group, Grand Rainbow Initiative (GRI), yesterday established its presence in the South East zone, when it launched a zonal office in Enugu.

The group, which started as a University of Port Harcourt Alumni Association seven years ago, is poised to promote merit above sentimental agitation through support for credible, dynamic and visionary leadership in Nigeria.

In a keynote address by the National Coordinator, Hon Paul Abbey, he said Nigeria’s democracy had outgrown primordial tendencies of ethnicity or zoning, and called on Nigerians to rise above ethnic politics and vote for credible candidates in 2011 elections.

He restated the group’s preparedness to ensure victory for Goodluck Jonathan, hinging the coalition’s stand on his wealth of experience as deputy governor, governor, vice president, acting president and his achievements since he became president.
Further, he said Jonathan’s efforts to ensure that Nigeria was de-listed from the United State’s terror list and his resolve to conduct free and fair election in 2011 are among several reasons for the group’s support.
According to Abbey, the comment by the South East governors and Ohanaeze Ndigbo also gave credence to the group’s support for Jonathan.

The governors and the pan-Igbo socio-cultural group had said of Jonathan’s stewardship: “In less than one year as Mr President, many political watchers in the South East said he has shown that the promise he made to Ndigbo to ensure that fairness is done to them and other zones was not for formality. For Ndigbo, they say Jonathan has made history as the first President who gave the Igbo charge of the Nigerian security network by appointing an Igbo man as the Chief of Army Staff and the Minister of Interior.”
