Kidnapped Enugu monarch : Abductors yet to contact family
Enugu, Headlines, State News Wednesday, October 19th, 2011Family of traditional ruler of Obuofia autonomous community in the Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, Igwe Obiora Igwesi who was kidnapped last Friday in Enugu has expressed worry over the failure of the gunmen to establish contact with the family.
A close family source who spoke to Daily Sun in Enugu expressed fears and apprehension that nothing had so far been heard about the missing traditional ruler.
The source who would not want his name in print disclosed that the communication gap had created tension in the community regarding the safety of their traditional ruler.
Igwe Obiora Igwesi, who is an elder brother to former House of Representatives member, Mr. Uchenna Igwesi (aka USA) was reportedly whisked away at about 7.45 pm on Friday by unknown gunmen.
Family sources said the traditional ruler was abducted around the Meniru Street, in the Awkunanaw area of the Enugu metropolis where he had gone for a meeting.
The traditional ruler’s mobile phones have been switched off since the incident and had made communication completely impossible. The police in Enugu, which earlier confirmed the kidnap said there was no need for panic as the command was on top of the situation.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ebere Amaraizu (ASP), told our reporter that the police had been monitoring the situation very closely and hoped to get results sooner than later.
He, however, refused to give details of how far the command had gone in the case insisting that for security reasons the police would prefer to be mute for now but assured that it would soon have stories to tell the people.
The incident was the second in less than one week in the state as unknown gunmen had also killed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) council chairman for Enugu South, Stanley Ani, near his residence.
