Ekiti: Fayemi awards 14 roads contracts
Ekiti, State News Sunday, November 20th, 2011Ekiti State governor, Dr.
Kayode Fayemi, has warned contractors handling the 14 newly awarded road projects across the state against shoddy jobs and involvement in shady deals with government officials.
The governor gave the warning in Ado Ekiti at a meeting with the contractors on the specifications for the construction of the new roads.
The new roads are: the dualisation of Old Garage- Ojumose road in Ado Ekiti, Old Garage – Ajilosun road, Igede-Awo- Osi-Ido road, Ikere-Igbara Odo road and Ikogosi-Ipole Iloro-Efon road. Others include Ijan-Ise road; Ijero-Ipoti-Ayetoro road, Ilawe- Igbara Odo- Ibuji road; Ikole- Ijesa-Isu-Iluomoba road; Ijan-Ise road; and Oye-Ikun-Otun road; dualisation of Igbehin- Fist Baptist Church (via post office); Ijigbo Baptist College- Ilawe.
The roads will be flagged off during the governor’s tour of the 16 local government areas billed to commence tomorrow.
Fayemi said the state cannot afford a repeat of past failed experience on road construction; adding that his administration was not ready to work with any contractor would does not have ability to deliver durable roads “on cost and in time.”
“Ekiti people are desirous of improvement on their roads and we want jobs that will be done that we will not go back there in one year’s time because that was the experience around here: under two years the roads are gone”, he stated.
While saying that the state has had bad experience with some contractors handling its road projects in the past, leading to late completion and shoddy jobs, the governor said the contractors were carefully selected based on their records, merit and ability to deliver quality job.
He added that the state government will pay for the construction work through the bond it just obtained at the capital market and stressed that government would neither take any excuse for non-performance nor allow any contractor to go on holiday while work should be on-going during the dry season.
Responding on behalf of other contractors, Engineer David Omoya, thanked the government for the confidence reposed in them and assured that they would not only work according to specification but also put in motion logistics for the timely delivery of the roads.
