PDP moves to suspend Gov. Sylva
Bayelsa, Party Politics, Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP), State News Saturday, November 26th, 2011There are indications of moves by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to suspend the embattled Governor Timipre Sylva of Bayelsa State, over anti-party activities.
A source at the Wadata Plaza, national secretariat, in Abuja, told Saturday Tribune that the party was “already initiating moves to invoke some sections of the PDP constitution, which stipulate punishments or sanctions for any member that failed to explore the internal party mechanism, in addressing personal or individual grievances.”
The source hinted that the party perceived the decision of the governor, who was disqualified from participating in last Saturday governorship primary election, to drag PDP to court as an affront on the party and a flagrant disrespect for PDP constitution, which regulates the conduct of its members.
“Arrangements are already on to invoke some sections of the PDP constitution, which would address the rash reaction of Governor Sylva to his disqualification by the party leadership, which cited alleged security factor and operation of foreign accounts as hurdles against the governor’s second term ambition.”
“The disciplinary committee is already working on appropriate sanctions against Sylva, which ranges from suspension to expulsion from the party for violating the rules regarding the resolution of complaints any member has against the party,” the source hinted.
The governor had approached a Federal High Court, in Abuja, a few days before the primary election, seeking, among other reliefs, an injunction restraining the PDP from conducting the exercise.
Honourable Henry Seriake Dickson, the lawmaker representing Sagbama/Ekeremor Constituency in the House of Representatives won the primaries.
Reacting to the purported plan to suspend Sylva, his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Doifie Ola said “it is a double punishment for the PDP to plan Governor Sylva’s suspension, having denied him the right to participate in the primary election”
“The governor had gone to court to enforce his fundamental human rights and seek justice. The party denied him justice by shoving him out. They did not even allow him to compete in the primaries. You can only be a full member of the party if your rights are not tampered with. What the party is saying now is that he is a half member,” he emphasised.
He added, “There can be no half membership of the party. You will rather be a full member of the party. In this case, the party is the aggressor. Planning or going ahead to suspend him is a double punishment. It is purely a politics of exclusion.”
