Group wants UNN renamed after Ojukwu

The Movement for Revolutionary Change (MRC) a non-government organization
(NGO) has advised the Federal Government to immortalize the late Biafran
warlord and national leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA),
Odumegwu Ojukwu by renaming the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) as
Odumegwu Ojukwu University (OON).

The group said renaming a university of the UNN’s standard in honour of the late
leader is well deserved, especially when viewed against the background of his
place in the Nigerian history.

Describing him as an ‘hero’ and one the last ‘titans’ in Nigerian politics, the MRC
in statement issued at weekend, said his death marked the end of a generation of
Great leaders who commanded the followership, respect, and honour of Nigerians.
“Ojukwu’s place in Nigeria’s history stands in the same realm with the other
minds like Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sir Nnamdi Azikwe, and
Alhaji Aminu Kano. These were remarkable leaders of their people, unlike what we
now have in the political space where ‘political liliputians’ who rigged their ways to
powers at various levels are claiming statesmanship”, the statement added.

The group however noted with regret that issues which led to the Nigerian civil war
are still very much in the psyche of the people.

“Though the civil war has officially ended forty one years ago, there is an ‘unofficial
civil war’, whereby the Nigerian state is still silently and programmatically fighting
its people through the bad governance  resulting in mass hunger, penury,
debilitating disease, joblessnessness, and distress.

“Though the civil war ended forty one years ago,  another war is on going, as the
occupiers of apparatus of power continue to implement policies that breed distrust
and exacerbate religious, political, social and economic conflict among Nigerian
nationalities”, the statement further explained.

The MRC also expressed optimism that the Nigerian people will eventually emerge
victors as the impending Nigerian revolution will resolve issues that cause mutual
suspicion and acrimony among Nigerian nationalities. “We expressed hope that
the retrogressive march of the nation will soon be reversed through the revolution
in Nigeria”, the group assured.
