Ex-guber candidate shot death in Warri
Delta, Headlines, State News Monday, November 28th, 2011Ex-governorship candidate of the Citizens Popular Party (CPP) in Delta State, Chief Ogbe Onokpite, was shot dead last Saturday night by police in Warri, just as notable lawyer, Festus Keyamo, condemned the killing, describing it as callous and wicked.
Keyamo, who lambasted the police when he addressed newsmen in Warri yesterday, said there would be no peace until the trigger-happy policemen who killed the politician were brought to justice.
According to him, certain persons went to police patrol team from ‘A’ Division, Warri and identified the victim who was resting at a popular hotel on the outskirt of Warri, and first of all shot him on his leg, chest and waist.
Keyamo, who vowed to pursue the case to it’s logical conclusion, said he would be meeting with the inspector general of police with a petition and asked for coroner’s inquest to be carried out on the late politician before any further action was taken.
“This is no doubt a case of assassination executed with all forms of wickedness and evil. Ogbe was stripped naked and we want the world to see the wickedness and the venom with which the killing was carried out. This is certainly man’s inhumanity to man,” Keyamo said.
Elder statesman, Chief Frank Ovie Kokori, described the killing as barbaric, naked murder as well as extra judicial killing of an innocent and fearless Nigerian.
“It is politically motivated because Ogbe Onokpite was a gubernatorial candidate of the Citizens Popular Party on two occasion. Effort must be stepped up to apprehend the policemen who killed him and bring them to Justice,” noted Chief Kokori, who was secretary general of NUPENG.
Earlier, the state Commissioner of Police, Mamman Tsafe, had told newsmen of the arrest and killing of an alleged gunrunner, Chief Ogbe Onokpite, who, he said, had engaged the police, who went to arrest him, in a cross fire.
