FEC approves N18.7bn contracts (More opportunity to loot)
Latest Politics Wednesday, November 30th, 2011THE Federal Executive Council (FEC), on Wednesday, approved various contracts worth N18.7 billion for implementation.
The meeting, presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan, approved the contracts covering such areas as power, transport and emergency services.
Under power, contract for the supply of gas to the Papalanto power plant was awarded at the cost of N1.02 billion plus $20.234 million, with a completion period of seven months.
The Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, who briefed State House correspondents along with his Power, Education, Culture and Tourism counterparts, Professor Barth Nnaji, Professor Ruqqayat Rufa’i and Edem Duke respectively, after the meeting, said the contract was re-awarded as a result of the inability of the initial contractor to meet up.
Another contract approved in Wednesday was the supply of Aluminum Conductor Composite Core Reinforced (ACCCR) for the purpose of re-conductoring of the Itu-Calabar 132kv line in the sum of $1,627,464.00 payable at the prevailing exchange rate at the time of payment plus N24, 853,002.74 .
According to Maku, the contract, which would be delivered in 32 weeks, became necessary because the Itu-Calabar 132kv was currently overloaded with a maximum wheeling capacity of only 60mw.
Similarly, the council approved the sum of N6.63 billion for the purchase of textbooks in various subjects for primaries 1 and 2 pupils; and library resource materials for junior secondary schools in 34 states of the country.
Maku said this would be executed by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
Also approved by the council was N5.61 billion contract for the supply and installation of new communications solutions for the eastern section of the Nigeria Railway Corporation.
