77,324 workers now on Delta govt pay roll — HOS
Delta, Headlines, State News Wednesday, November 30th, 2011THE staff strength of Delta State public service now stands at 77,324, with primary school teachers topping the list with 22,957.
Secondary schools parade a total of 22,000 teachers, while the civil service has 16,481, and the hospital management board has 4,644 staff.
Delta State Head of Service, Mr Okechukwu Ofili, who disclosed this while briefing journalists on the 2011 public service day celebration in Asaba, said the state wage bill has increased geometrically to N5.109 billion monthly.
According to him, the amount would increase by the time Delta State University and State Universal Education Board which are yet to be captured in the computer pay roll are added.
Mr Ofili said in implementing the minimum wage, government has decided to pay N18,500.
He said in 2011, a total of N327,215,000 has been disbursed as loan to 635 beneficiaries under the public officers housing loan scheme, just as N163 million was given as vehicle loans to 75 public officers.
On ghost workers, the head of service stated that the government was still investigating a report that several millions of naira were being paid out to such workers.
He informed that casual workers, most of them engaged since the creation of the state in 1991, have been fully employed in the state broadcasting service and Art council, while the same benevolence would soon be extended to others.
