Riot: Provost, registrar sacked in Katsina

The Katsina State government has announced the immediate sack of the provost and the registrar of  Yusuf Bala Usman College of Legal and General Studies, Daura.

The government also announced the dissolution of the Governing Council of the college with immediate effect.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Muntari Ibrahim, stated this in Katsina on Thursday while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting.

The meeting, he said, had approved the removal of the provost, Abdullahi Saulawa and the registrar, Mohammed Ibrahim, for mishandling  a recent students’ unrest in the college and directed them to hand over to their deputies.

He said the action was taken after the council approved the recommendations of the committee set up to investigate the  riot.

Ibrahim added that the council had approved the immediate replacement of the Students Affairs Officer “with a more appropriate and competent person.”

He said the council had referred the case of the college’s Finance Officer to the Office of the state Auditor-General to determine the claim of loss of funds during the disturbances.

The SSG said the institution would be re-opened on December 12.

“The students must pay for all the damages of the college properties and are also to bring letters of undertaking from their parents to be of good behaviour,” he stated.

Ibrahim added that the council had also directed that the female hostels of the institution be put to immediate use, while directing the state Rural Water Supply Agency to drill bore holes at the institution to address the water problem of the college.
