Robbers cart away xmas items in Akure

Efforts by Akure North local government council area of Ondo State to ameliorate the suffering of some indigenes of the area through its empowerment scheme have suffered a major set back as night marauders burgled the council secretariat and carted away empowerment items running to several millions of naira

The items, which were to be distributed to some artisans and traders in the council area in the form of assistance to improve their standard of living, were found to have grown wings and flown away few days the items were delivered to the council

The empowerment items it was gathered include, hairdressing dryers machines, grinding machines, generating set, refrigerators and some other artisans tools and equipment.
Other items carted away the by night marauders are bags of rice and cartons of groundnut oil and packs of gifts items bought by the council as Christmas gifts for staff, friends and political associates, traditional rulers, chiefs and notable personalities in the council

The night marauders, it was learnt came with two lorries and one bus in the dead of night, they first dealt with the council night guards and later gained access to the council store where the hoodlums were reported to have packed and loaded the items in their vehicles and drove off
It was gathered that it took the hoodlums over an hour after they had overpowered the night guards to move in the items in their vehicles, some of them were said to be tired while carrying the items to the vehicles due to the weight of some of the items

Pandemonium however broke out in the morning when the council staff resumed for work and discovered that the council store had been burgled and almost all the items meant for empowerment scheme had been carted away
The staff, it was gathered later discovered the two night guards in a room where they were locked up by the marauders
The incident generated a lot of controversy as some staff and politicians both within and outside the council were raising eyebrow that some insiders in the council masterminded the robbery incident
Others believed it was politically motivated by some politicians in the area to rubbish the present leadership of the council just to score cheap political point that it was during their tenure that robbers carted away items meant for the empowerment scheme

The police spokesman, Adeniran Aremu (DSP) while confirming the incident said police had made some arrest and the investigation was on going saying police will get to the root of the matter and anybody caught involving in the robbery case, no matter how highly placed will face the full wrath of the law
Efforts to get the council chairman, Femi Ofakunrin to comment on the development proved abortive as all his mobile phones are switched off while some of his personal assistants contacted declined comments.
