The police in Lagos said on Friday that they were intensifying surveillance of identified flashpoints in the state during Christmas and New Year festivities.
The spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, Mr. Samuel Jinadu, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.
Jinadu said the command had mobilised all area commands and divisions for effective policing duty during the Yuletide.
He said that due to the importance attached to the season, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Yakubu Alkali, did not approve leave for any officer, “so as to have enough men on ground.”
He said Amoured Personnel Carriers and plain clothes officers had been deployed in black spots, recreational and event centres.
Jinadu said the ban on fireworks was still in force and that anybody caught with bangers would be arrested and prosecuted.
He advised commercial motorcyclists to always be vigilant in their areas of operation in order to detect suspected criminals hiding under the guise of being motorcyclists.
