‘Bankole, Nafada have case to answer’ – EFCC
EFCC Politics Tuesday, January 24th, 2012The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday told Justice Suleiman Belgore of an Abuja High Court that a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, and his Deputy, Usman Nafada, have a case to answer.
The accused ex-legislators are facing trial over alleged N38bn fraud and criminal breach of trust.
A statement by the acting spokesperson of the EFCC, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said the application was made in response to an application for a no-case submission filed by counsel for the accused persons on the ground that the anti-graft agency had no sufficient evidence to prosecute their clients.
The accused persons were arraigned on June 13, 2011, on a 17 counts of criminal breach of trust, misappropriation and theft.
The EFCC, in a counter affidavit filed through its counsel, Festus Keyamo, dismissed the application saying they were another ploy to stall the trial.
He further argued that the accused persons are not charged for “over-spending but misappropriation of funds.”
