Mixed reactions greet Abubakar’s appointment

 Abubakar

Mixed reactions on Wednesday greeted the appointment of Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, as the acting Inspector-General of Police.

Abubakar replaced Mr. Hafiz Ringim, who retired from service on Wednesday.

While the President of the Campaign for Democracy, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, condemned the appointment, the Deputy Minority Leader, House of Representatives, Kawu Sumaila, hailed President Goodluck Jonathan for picking Abubakar.

The CD President, in a statement, said Abubakar was not the right man for the job because the Niki Tobi panel indicted him over the Jos crisis of 2001.

Describing Ringim’s retirement as belated, the CD President said, “The fact is that there is a systematic failure in the police.”

But Sumaila (ANPP, Kano) commended the President for Abubakar’s appointment.

In a statement in Abuja, Sumaila described the new acting IG “as serious minded and well-trained officer who has distinguished himself over the years with clean record of achievements and incorruptibility.”

Sumaila prayed Almighty God to grant him the wisdom to carry out his duties diligently and effectively to the best of his ability.

Also, the northern socio-political group, the Arewa Consultative Forum, described Abubakar’s appointment as a welcome development.

The group, in a statement by his National Publicty Secretary, Mr. Anthony Sani, said, “Whatever it will take for peace to reign in the security is welcome.

“This is because the buck stops on the table of Mr. President because the security situation in the country is under his watch.”

Former Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Bayelsa State chapter, Mr. Stanley Damabide, described Ringim’s retirement as long overdue.

Damabide, who spoke to our correspondent in Yenagoa, urged Jonathan to view Ringim’s retirement as the beginning of the belated need to overhaul the security system
