acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar

Double explosions on Tuesday rocked the Angwar Sarki area of Kaduna metropolis, killing a policeman and injuring two persons.

The explosions occurred barely a week after Boko Haram suicide bombers attacked military formations in Kaduna.

The dead policeman, Sunday Badang, attached to the Anti-bomb Squad was on the team that raced to the scene after the first bomb went off.

Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Bala Nasarawa, said Badang was killed when a bomb he was to detonate exploded, killing him instantly.

The first explosion took place at about 11.33am close to the Angwan Sarki Market opposite the busy Kaduna State Transport Authority Motor Park, while the second went off at about 12.17pm close to the Sultan Bello Mosque still in Angwan Sarki in Kaduna North Local Government Area.

It was learnt that after the first bomb exploded, soldiers who moved to the scene discovered the second and invited the Police Anti-Bomb Squad.

The explosions created panic among residents of the area who fled the area.

Traders at the nearby Angwan Sarki Market were forced to close their shops while schools and financial institutions around the area also shut down abruptly.

Travellers waiting at the KSTA Motor Park to board vehicles to other parts of the state abandoned their luggage and took to their heels.

“We were still scared and worried about the first explosion but when the police anti-bomb people arrived, we thought it was over until a policeman was killed by the second explosion. It’s too bad,” a resident, Abdullahi, said.

When our correspondent visited the scene of the blasts, the body of Badang was strewn across the road.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Aminu Lawan, said investigations into the incident had begun.

Nasarawa said, “The fragment affected two other persons near the scene. They were rushed to 44 Army Reference Hospital Kaduna for treatment and the victims are in stable condition.”
