Plateau: Igbo group warns on Jos crisis

Izu Umunna Cultural Association, Nigeria, a Jos-based Igbo socio-cultural organisation, has warned that it will no longer fold its hands and watch the blood of innocent Igbo men and women spilled on the streets of Jos in the name of crises.

The group, in a strongly worded statement signed by the President, Prof Zebulon Okoye; and Secretary General, Chief Elvis Chukwu, said, “enough is enough.”

The warning by Izu Ummuna came at the same time that a group in the Diaspora rooting for a Jonathan/Sambo presidency in 2011, Goodluck4Nigerians Movement, condemned the recent spate of bomb blasts in Jos, the Plateau State capital and Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory. It said that the bombings were politically-motivated.

The group, in a statement signed by the coordinator, Mr. Charles Sylvester, and e-mailed to The Punch dismissed the blasts as “utter acts of cowardice.”

“We in Goodluc k4Nigerians Movement are appalled by the spate of bomb blasts, which rocked Jos and Abuja. We see these acts as being politically-motivated carried out by those who don’t want anything good for Nigeria.

“All their intention is to scuttle the wish of all Nigerians to elect President Goodluck Jonathan and Namadi Sambo in 2011. But we know that they will not succeed because God has already destined continuity for President Goodluck Jonathan in 2011.”

The statement also said, “It is with utmost sense of sadness that we lament the chronic and cruel killing of Igbos in Jos which reared its ugly head again on the eve of Christmas and as recent as last Saturday with the bombing of innocent souls in some parts of Jos. As usual the Igbo suffered high level of casualties.

“Shockingly, the resort to bombing is a sinister and scientific dimension that has been added to the orgy of blood-letting. It stands to reason that the mayhem can no longer be blamed on idle and uneducated rabbles as was hitherto the case. We believe that these bombing which were well-calculated and synchronized can only be planned and executed by a highly educated group and organised through demented minds.”

Izu Umunna urged Ndigbo not to be cowed by the recent events but to remain firm ad vigilant.
