US Congress Wants Atiku Prosecuted
Headlines Thursday, January 13th, 2011The Congress of the United State has requested the attorney-general, US Department of Justice to file criminal procedure against former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and his wife, Jennifer for alleged money laundering.
In a letter signed by the chairman, Committee on the Judiciary, John Conyers, Jr dated January 7, 2011 and addressed to the US attorney-general, Hon. Eric H. Holder, the Congress, based its request on the report by the US Senate Permanent Sub-committee on Investigations (PSI), which indicted Atiku and his wife of financial crimes.
According to the ranking member of US Congress, “In its bipartisan staff report titled, “Keeping Foreign Corruption Out of the United States: Four Case Histories,” the sub-committee details four serious matter involving potential crimes, including one involving US citizen Jennifer Douglas, wife of Atiku Abubakar, former Vice President and current presidential candidate in Nigeria.”
“I realise these raise serious questions and involve matters of foreign relations as well as more conventional law enforcement consideration.”
The Congress added that there was a risk that the US ability to promote the rule of law abroad may be compromised if it could not remedy alleged violations of its own anti-corruption laws by powerful foreigners.
A foreign agency also quoted the Department of State as saying yesterday that US was not in support of Abubakar’s aspiration and warned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) against voting for him.
Responding, the spokesman of Atiku Campaign Organisation, Malam G. Shehu said, “We will not continue to respond to a moribund issue. The PDP presidential screening panel are men and women of high integrity, they screened and cleared Atiku Abubakar to contest the party’s presidential primary election.
“We are now concerned with winning the party’s ticket.”wp_posts
