PDP moves against Reps’ impeachment threat

THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Thursday, said necessary moves are in top gear to resolve the threat by the House of Representatives to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan, over poor implementation of the 2012 budget.

Addressing newsmen in Abuja on the outcome of its weekly National Working Committee (NWC) meeting, the deputy national chairman, of the party, Dr Sam-Sam Jaja, said the party was already working round the clock to meet with the lawmakers, as well as President Jonathan, in order to resolve their area of differences in the interest the nation.

He pointed out that though the party has the majority in the two chambers of the National Assembly, it would still engage the lawmakers in dialogue, since it is their constitutional rights to ensure that things are done rightly, adding that impeachment matter was not peculiar to Nigeria.

On party membership, Dr Jaja said as of today, nobody knew the exact figure of the PDP members nationwide, adding that the NWC had resolved to carry out on-line registration of its old and new members.

He said the registration option was being adopted in order to allow mass participation of every member and to prevent a situation whereby the excercise would be hijacked as experienced in the past.

He also hinted that new congresses would be conducted in Taraba, Ondo, Benue and Jigawa states, while that of Ogun State was in progress.

Dr Jaja said as part of efforts to reposition the party and reconcile all aggrieved members, the NWC had set up a committee that would come up with a white paper on the Dr Alex Ekwueme-led Reconciliation Committee report.

On welfare of the staffers of the national secretariat of the party, he said the current welfare scheme is being reviewed, so as to motivate them.
