US Embassy in Abuja sends staff home early
American Politics, Headlines Saturday, September 15th, 2012Following the increased level of alert in United States missions across the world, the US Embassy in Abuja was closed to the public two hours ahead of schedule on Friday.
An investigation by SATURDAY PUNCH showed that members of the staff of the embassy were allowed to go home earlier than the usual 1.00pm.
Fridays are usually observed as half working day, hence workers are allowed to leave the premises at 1pm.
However, with the growing threats of attack, especially after Friday prayers, the members of staff were advised to leave around 11 am.
An official of the embassy, who craved anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the issue, said it was the standard practice.
He said, “It was nothing unusual. Even when there is no threat, we close at 1:00 pm on Fridays because it is considered a half-day.”
Earlier, our correspondent had noticed a slight increase in the number of armed policemen around the embassy.
