AWC: Falcons outwit Ethiopia 3-0

Goals from Esther Sunday, Stella Mbachu and striker Perpetua Nkwocha on Thursday helped champions Super Falcons overcome a resilient Ethiopian side 3-0 at the ongoing African Women Championship in Bata, Equatorial Guinea.

Falcons top Group B with six points from two games after beating Cameroon 2-1 in their first game. But the Falcons would have to wait until the final group games on Sunday to be sure of qualification for the semi-final after Cameroon hammered Cote d’Ivoire 4-1.

Cameroon and the Ivoirians have three points each and both sides can still advance to the last four if they win their final group games with the required goal margins.

Falcons should have been ahead by at least four goals in the first half but for the impressive Liya Shiberu in goal for the Ethiopians, who made several world-class saves to the delight of fans at the Nkoantoma Stadium.

But Shiberu’s might was broken in the 27th minute when Sunday easily fired home from big striker Emueje Ogbiagbevha’s floated pass inside the box.

In the second half, Falcons scored two goals in less than two minutes to break Ethiopian hearts. First Mbachu popped up to score her side’s second goal in the 65th minute. The midfielder beautifully controlled a long pass with her chest on the edge of the Ethiopian box, turned swiftly before unleashing a ferocious shot that gave Shiberu no chance.

Nkwocha piled more misery on the East Africans just over a minute later when she outpaced her marker, beat the onrushing Shiberu outside the box before tapping home Nigeria’s third and her second goal of the tournament
